This past Thursday and Friday the varsity girls cross country team traveled to Carrolton, GA to compete in the GHSA State Cross Country Meet. Coming out of a strong region meet performance at Webb Bridge Park where the team finished in fourth place, the girls’ team looked to carry their momentum into the race and up the famous final hill on the course in Carrolton. This was the first time that these runners had been to the state meet and the experience was a memorable finale to a great season.
As the gun went off, the girls positioned themselves well among the large pack of runners from all thirty-two teams. Isabelle Du Plessis started the race off strong and was among the top ten runners at the mile mark and Gracie Truax was racing within the top twenty positions. As the race continued to the second loop of the course, Truax took over the top spot for the varsity girls and maintained her pace to finish in 18th place in a time of 20:51. Du Plessis helped combine as a strong second finisher in 32nd and the Knights packed up to complete their five scoring runners. Megan Strickland had arguably her strongest race of the season and finished in 62nd as she passed many runners throughout the final lap and Danielle Hodges finished three spots behind in a time of 22:18. Lily Williams continued to show her potential for the future as she scored for the Knights and completed a strong group in 68th place. The environment and excitement of this event will certainly give the team an experience that will motivate them to return next season.
Overall, the girls’ team had an incredible performance and finished seventh out of thirty-two teams. The entire region placed among the top seven teams and it showed everyone the high level of competition that they face every week as they race. This is the highest team finish in school history and it truly demonstrates the hard work and effort that this team has put in this season. Congratulations to the entire team on their season and finish at the GHSA State Meet! Go Knights!
