The Centennial Knights dismantled the Lanier Longhorns in the 1st round of the AAAAAA GHSA State Playoffs 48-14. The home playoff win was the first for the Knights since 2002 and they did it in dominating fashion. Lanier struck first but did not score again until the 4th quarter was winding down. In between the Knights scored 48 unanswered points, including 41 in the first half.
As has been the case all year, the offense was on fire. This is the But it was the total team effort on defense that stood out. After a 85 yard drive to open the game, the defense clamped down. They forced a turnover on a 4th down stop and then added an interception for a TD to make the game 21-7; at that point the route was on.
This playoff win was a long time coming for the Knights. The last playoff win was 2002. There were playoff appearances in 2009 and 2011 but no wins. Over the last three years, there has been drastic improvement. 20 regular season wins over the last 3 years, when previous teams had only won 19 games over the 5 years before it. After another 2nd place finish in Region 7, a playoff win was the next step.
