Centennial High School Fencing continued its strong season with an outstanding performance by both the men and women at the GHSFL tournament over the weekend.
Maggie Fritts earned her second gold medal of the season with a dominant day. Fritts stormed through the preliminary pools and direct elimination (DE) bouts, helping the women move up the GHSFL standings. All five Centennial women qualified for DEs, with Cursten Howard (5th) and Crystal Favorito (8th) scoring important points for the Lady Knights.
Jermain Leon led the men with a fantastic silver medal effort. Entering the DEs as the ninth seed, Leon defeated the 8th, 1st and 4th seeds on his way to the finals. The men showed their depth with 18 men qualifying for the DE rounds. Nick Bray (7), Drew Walker (11), Quinn Harrison (13), Roman Cheek (14) and Daniel Sandfelder (15) helped the men gain enough points to maintain first place in the GHSFL standings.
Led by two time medalist Walker, the 9th graders continue to show great promise for the men. Axel Alvarez, Tanner Cartwright, Connor Johnson, Apollo Parnas, Nick Welch, Joseph Wright all advanced from the preliminary pools to the Direct Elimination bracket.
The Knights next competition is on November 4th at Campbell High School, when they face the hosts, Lassiter, North Springs, Pope, and Walton.
