The Centennial Fencing Team competed in their 7th tournament on Saturday, January 16th at Northview High School. The Knights had their best overall showing of the season, with 8 different fencers scoring points for the team.
Senior Joshua “Paco” Yao led the men with a medal winning performance. Yao’s third place finish propelled him to a top 15 individual standing in the state. Fellow Senior Jackson Barnes earned his best result ever, finishing 8th. By earning points, Barnes qualifies for the Individual Championships in February. Nick Bray and Duncan Hemauer also scored point winning results, helping boost the men’s squad to 7th in the state.
Maggie Fritts (8th) and Casey Archambault (11th) once again led the Lady Knights performances. They were joined in the top 16 by first time point scorers Olivia Katz (15) and Sarah Harrison (16). Katz and Harrison have now qualified for the GHSFL Individual Championship next month. Centennial’s lady squad is now number 5 in the GHSFL standings.
Coach Gene Gettler remains pleased with the progress of the squad. Their final regular season tournament is at Centennial this Saturday, January 30th. Admission is free, so please come cheer on the Knights.
